Students who want to gain real-world experience in business, particularly in advertising and marketing, have a great opportunity to do so in the Student Media Center. The SMC supports itself in large part through advertising sales.
Every member of our sales force is an Ole Miss student, as is the Business Manager who helps to coordinate sales efforts. All majors are welcome at the SMC. In fact, we find that students studying business and majoring in marketing are especially attracted to advertising sales.
Students interested in the visual arts and graphic design can find a place to hone their skills on our Creative Services staff. The Creative area is staffed entirely by students – any of whom are majoring or minoring in art. Students must have a keen eye for what is visually pleasing, along with proficiency in industry standard software. A strong creative bent and an eye for detail including good spelling skills are necessary in this production-oriented work environment. Creative staffers design all sorts of items for the SMC: both print and online advertisements, fliers, forms and brochures. Students in Creative get an opportunity to build a diverse portfolio of their own work, and their best print and online ads are regularly entered in college newspaper design competitions.
